This cannot wait

Seven doses of Cidofovir have not cleared the adenovirus, and he is on oxygen support.

At just five years old, when most children are experiencing the wonders of preschool and playground games, young Iniyan S was forced into a stark hospital environment. He was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anaemia, a catastrophic, rare type of bone marrow failure. In this condition, the body’s internal factory completely shuts down, failing to manufacture the red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets essential to sustain human life. Every day without intervention was a severe risk of internal hemorrhaging or fatal infection.

The definitive medical solution required an immediate, high-stakes Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation. On February 6, 2026, Iniyan’s mother stepped forward as a haploidentical donor, willingly giving her own stem cells to rewrite her son’s future. The complex transplant surgery was executed with clinical precision at Apollo Speciality Hospital. For a brief moment, the family believed the worst of the nightmare was finally behind them.

However, his road to recovery was quickly hit by severe complications. Regular post-transplant viral monitoring subsequently showed positivity for both adenovirus and BK virus. Despite the medical team administering a full course of 7 doses of Cidofovir, the aggressive Adenovirus infection has persisted. Due to this prolonged viral strain, Iniyan has developed severe pneumonia and now requires continuous oxygen support to maintain his respiratory function. To eliminate the persistent virus, doctors at Apollo Speciality Hospital have planned an advanced, targeted adenovirus-specific Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes (CTL) therapy.
